YOU are the protection of our drinking water

Recently, we were told that the governor has allowed New York City and Syracuse to protect their watersheds from hydrofracking. But that’s for now, and of course anything can happen in a world where toxic chemicals are allowed to be pumped into the ground and the waste brought to the surface.  If hydrofracking is allowed anywhere in New York State, it’s a simply slippery slope before our drinking water is OOPS! somehow contaminated.  I’m talking about EASTWOOD DRINKING WATER.

Please read the following and make at least one phone call:

Help PASS Legislation to Establish Moratorium
on Hydro-Fracking in NYS Until 120 Days After the  EPA Study is Complete

This bill was introduced by Assemblyman Steven Englebright.  He is the only geologist in the NYS Legislature. He has taught geology in the SUNY system for years.

This bill has many co-sponsors in the Assembly.  Please check to see if your Assembly person has signed on.  If not, call them today. Joan Christensen of Syracuse and Barbara Lifton of Ithaca have both signed on.

An equivalent Senate bill needs to be introduced and sponsored.

The logical person to introduce such a bill is Senator Antoine Thompson, District 60, who is the Chair of the Senate Environmental Committee.  His aides keep saying he is studying and reviewing the subject.  His office has said the same thing since last year.

His Albany aide said this week (April 19) that they are not hearing from grassroots people, organizations or municipal government about the need for a moratorium.

Many of us have called, written and gone to Albany to lobby for both moratoriums and bans.  Perhaps we need to be louder still.  This bill A10490 gives very specific, all-encompassing legislation to protect NYS  for the next two years.

PLEASE  take ten minutes to call three important Senators.

Senator Antoine Thompson
Chair of Senate Environmental Committee
Buffalo Area, District 60

Albany  518-455-3371

Buffalo  716-854-8705

Senator David Valesky

Increasingly powerful voice in the Senate.
Syracuse area

Albany   518-455-2838
Syracuse  315-478-8745

Senator John Defrancisco

Syracuse area, 50th district

Albany  518-455-3511

Syracuse  315-428-7632

Firmly request that the Senators introduce and, or sponsor a Senate version of Assembly Bill A10490 establishing an immediate moratorium on hydro-fracking until the EPA study is complete.

If you have a municipal or organizational title, affiliation or membership, please name it to the staff person on the phone.

PLEASE take the time to make these calls today!

Citizen pressure is making a difference.  Just this week the DEC took our two unfiltered drinking water watersheds out of the regulatory plan. The Catskills and Skaneateles watersheds are now unofficially protected.  If those watersheds warrant protection, shouldn’t all watersheds be conserved?

Keep up the pressure, loud and clear, for the entire state.

Thank you for your time and energy.

Together, we can make a difference.

Please forward this to as many people and organizational list serves as possible.  We need to generate thousands of calls, quickly.  If possible let me know if you sent this out or posted it.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Stacey Smith
