RE:  Appl no. AS-08-33
City Planning Commission
201 East Washington Street
Syracuse, New York, 13202

Chairman Cowart and Members of the City Planning Commission,

My name is Lance Denno and I am the 5th District Councilor for the City of Syracuse. As such it is my duty to represent the interests and the will of the citizens of Eastwood.  As their elected voice,    I sincerely regret that due to other commitments I cannot personally appear before you to most forcefully express my objection to this application for a Sign Waiver.

The proposed “monument sign” is misnamed.  It could be only called “monumental” by meaning “large”.  We already have a true monument in the immediate vicinity, and that monument should be honored.

The people of Eastwood labored long and hard on designing and writing the District Overlay Requirements, and those requirements need to be enforced, not ignored.  These requirements were in place before Five Point Development came to town.

Furthermore, I would like to remind the Commission of the City’s Zoning Regulations on Signs, Article I, “Intent.”

“It is the intent of this law –
- to encourage sound aesthetic practices…
- to safeguard and enhance property values…
- to protect public investment in and the character and dignity of public buildings, open spaces and thoroughfares;
- to protect the distinctive appearance of Syracuse which is produced by its unique geography, topography, street patterns, skyline and architectural features;”   etc

On behalf of the people of Eastwood and all of Syracuse I am writing to state unequivocally that our Rules and Regulations need to be enforced, not waived.

Thank you for your time this evening and your service to our City.

Sincerely,

Lance Denno
