A tremendous win for sustainable development

Folks, I don’t like to post twice in one day, but I just can’t help it this time. I just caught the headlines at syracuse.com: Wal-Mart calls it quits on Liverpool site
Wow! This is truly a David-vs-Goliath story. That little village has been fighting this for five years. Inspired and aided by the leadership of the feisty Mayor Marlene J. Ward, the people of Liverpool formed the “Liverpool First” group several years ago in response to the threat (you can see the old website here - if it looks funky, it’s because I designed it). After we moved to Eastwood from Liverpool, I lost track of how the struggle was going, but worried about it as an example of the type of unsustainable development we are vigilant about here in Eastwood.
Well, it appears WalMart has decided that a supercenter at the edge of an historic village is unsustainable. Good for them. But even better… much, much better… for the folks of Liverpool. I can only imagine the celebratory atmosphere out at The Retreat tonight!
